Hair Loss

hair lossHair loss goes by the medical term Alopecia. Alopecia might be related to a disease, an acute symptom or any other medical reasons that need to be assessed.

Some types of hair loss might be temporary or chronic and that’s one of the things that should be assessed during the trichological consultation.

Symptoms of alopecia vary depending on the cause of the condition. They can range from a small bald patch to a complete loss of all body hair.

Causes

It’s normal to lose hair. We can lose between 50 and 100 hairs a day, often without noticing. Unfortunately, it becomes an issue when we notice this kind of hair loss in more quantity, leading to less hair density.

Some types of hair loss are permanent if not treated, like the cicatricial alopecia, such as the frontal fibrosing alopecia or lichen planus. Non cicatricial alopecia can be chronic such as the androgenetic alopecia and telogen effluvium.

Most of hair loss issues are temporary and can be reversed with the right treatment.

Diffuse hair loss is also a part of hair loss causes, and it can happen due to hormonal imbalances, mineral deficiencies (such as iron), menopause, stress, an illness, certain medical drugs, etc.

hair lossSome external factors might lead to hair loss as well, such as certain hair styles, excessive chemical treatments on hair that come in contact with the scalp.

These can impact generally on hair quality or cause excessive shedding as hair cells are the one of the most sensitive cells in the body to internal fluctuations.

Although it might seem scaring to having thinner hair and losing patches of hair, most of these conditions are reversible and it’s important for the patient to be assessed as soon as possible by a competent professional, such as a Trichologist.

Treatments

Medications indicated for hair regrowth might be for example Minoxidil, Finasteride, Dutasteride and many others. If a patient chooses do to a side treatment like PRP injections or mesotherapy, it’s important that the patient is correctly medicated as well for best results.

Medical health screening for hair loss may include blood tests such as complete blood count, iron studies, thyroid function tests, and others.
